Frequently Asked Questions

What is 1 teratree?

1 teratree is 1,000,000,000,000 trees. Tera- is the official SI unit prefix for 1,000,000,000,000 of something.
If you've ever bought a hard disk for a computer you might have seen the prefix tera- used before . A 1 terabyte hard disk refers to the drive having space for 1,000,000,000,000 bytes of data.

Why set up another organisation to plant trees?
Even when the Bonn Challenge meets its 150 million hectare of trees target in 2030, if the trees are 3.3m apart, we would still need to find a way to plant over 800,000,000,000 more trees.
Ideas like Ecosia have as of November 2019 planted more than 70,000,000 trees, but we need at least another 1000 ideas to be as successful before we'll have planted a teratree. This means there is plenty of space for new ideas, and lots of opportunity to share and learn from each other's successes.
